Spying Behind Enemy Lines
As a spy, it is your job to gather information about the enemy. Your general needs to know the location and numbers of enemy soldiers, as well as how many weapons and supplies they have. If you can figure out what the enemy is planning to do next, you will have an advantage in the next battle.StartFragment EndFragment How will you gather this information?EndFragment
Decision: Gathering Information
StartFragmentStartFragmentTrust your network of informants. You have convinced local people who live and work in enemy territory to pass you information. You’ve even turned a few people who work in the enemy’s War Department into secret agents. Using informants is the safest option, but it is the least reliable. Sometimes they tell you rumors, which are untrue or exaggerated, and some may be double agents planting false information. EndFragmentEndFragmentEndFragmentEndFragment
StartFragmentStartFragment EndFragmentPersonally go undercover in enemy territory. This way you can see with your own eyes what’s going on. If you can find a way to walk through the enemy’s camps, you can count numbers of men, tents, and supplies. You might overhear what they are planning to do next, or be able to steal battle plans. Of course, this is the most dangerous option. If they catch you, they’ll hang you!EndFragmentEndFragmentEndFragment
StartFragmentStartFragment EndFragmentScout from a distance. Send scouts into enemy territory to report from a distance on numbers of campfires, length of artillery trains, and so forth. You risk missing important information if the enemy is sneaky enough to hide their campfires and movements, but it is less dangerous than going undercover into the enemy’s camps.EndFragmentEndFragmentEndFragment
StartFragmentStartFragment1. Trust your network of informants.2. Personally go undercover in enemy territory.3. Scout from a distance. EndFragmentEndFragmentEndFragmentEndFragment
StartFragmentStartFragmentThe information your spies gather is known as intelligence. You're getting intelligence from scouts and agents-in-place. You’ve received a secret, coded message:The enemy is planning to move a large number of our men to a new prison deep in enemy territory. Beware! You need at least 40,000 or 45,000 troops. Do not underrate their strength and desperation. What is the best way to use this information to save lives?EndFragmentEndFragmentEndFragmentEndFragment
Decision: Using Intelligence
StartFragmentStartFragmentMount a surprise attack right now with 6,000 men.StartFragment EndFragment If you are successful, you can save your men from possible death in the terrible conditions in prison. In addition, they will be available to fight for you later, making your forces bigger in the future. Also, you might even be able to capture some of the enemy leaders and destroy some of their factories and storehouses. Take your 6,000 men and cross the river over Bottom’s Bridge to attack the enemy capital from the east.EndFragmentEndFragmentEndFragmentEndFragment
StartFragmentStartFragmentWait until you have enough men. StartFragment EndFragment It is possible you won’t be able to gather the kind of numbers recommended in the message. However, you might not be able to rescue the prisoners or capture the enemy leaders if you wait.EndFragmentEndFragmentEndFragmentEndFragment
StartFragmentStartFragmentDiscount this message as false information.StartFragment EndFragment This could be the enemy luring you into a trap. Beware!EndFragmentEndFragmentEndFragmentEndFragment
